wLAN Hotspot as DSL alternative for internet access
The task
650 soldiers at an American barracks can get only partially a very slow DSL internet access.
The demand for internet is very high. The number of the possible internet customer is estimated to be 60-80%.
The five 4-floored buildings lie up to 50m from each other away. Internet is to be installed in each room and in the cafeteria.
Each user is to get an internet flat rate, independently of the place of residence, in all buildings.
Planning: Local measurements
A local measurement for 2.4GHz resulted low signal loss in the case of 4 of 5 buildings.
As expected signal loss for 5GHz failed higher. A cable-bound network was missing and could only be realized with higher costs.
Offer / deployed technology
A dedicated line of 10Mbit SDSL was suggested. For each user a maximum bandwidth is planned by 1024 KBit,
and the surfing is not to fall in the peak times under 768 KBit, for up to 400 simultaneous hotspot connections.
The deployment of the license-free frequencies is offered (standards IEEE 802.11a/b/g).
All knots are to be connected by Cat5 cable or wirelessly in the more reliable 5GHz range.
Each access point knot is to reach a bandwidth of at least 15 MBit throughput.
A sufficient frequency spacing between devices is needed to avoid the disturbances by interference,
at each point where several access points reach each other.
The Hotspot server SBXP295 is to be used as hotspot accounting servers and for bandwidth management.
User administration and monitoring will take place over VPN (over Internet).
Installation / Netzwerk-Support
The installation was completed within one week. The network was prepared also for the VoIP deployment with
short signal running time with at the most 4 access points in a row (802.11a) and Cat5 cable to the hotspot server.
Compatibility with all devices (USA notebooks) was kept, through disabling of additional frequencies that could be used in the EU.
This network is running properly since years and the network support costs are lower than expected.
